 PROSE 6  -  The Artist 

The Author : Shiga Naoya (1883-1971) is a famous and celebrated Japanese short story writer of the 20th century. It wrote very sensitively about his people and their culture. The Artist unfurls before us the world of a talented Japanese boy Seibei. It shows how the adult world often causes damage to such talents. 

Summary :  

The Artist is a short story told by Shiga Naoya. He is a Japanese writer. In this story he tells the story of a talented Japanese boy, named Seibei.

Seibei was twelve year's boy who was a student of primary school. He had keen interest in the collection of gourds. He used to buy gourds wherever he found. Coming home he would first bore a neat hole in the top of the gourd and extracted the seeds. He filled it up with tea leaves and fetched it with dregs. He polished it carefully. 

In the next morning he found that the skin would be thoroughly damp for the overnight treatment. His artistic skill was not recognized by his parents. His parents wanted him to be a learned man. One day he found a gourd five inches long and bought for ten yen. He wanted to give it a lovely image. So he used to polish it under his desk in class time. One day his teacher caught him red handed and complained to his parents. The teacher confiscated the gourd and handed it over to a porter, who worked in the school. The porter kept int handing on his wall. the porter was in the need of money. He went ot a curio dealer who paid fifty yen for it . Later on it was sold to a wealthy collector who paid 600 yen for it.

एक दिन उसे पांच इंच लम्बा लौकी मिला । उसने उस पर पाॅलिस करना षुरू किया । वह कक्षा में डेस्क के नीचे ऐसा करता था । एक दिन कक्षा में वह ऐसा करते हुए पकड़ा गया । षिक्षक ने इसकी षिकायत उनके माता - पिता से की । उसने लौकी को छीनकर दरबान को दे दिया । दरबान उसे अपने घर की दिवार पर टांग दिया । आर्थिक अभाव में पड़ने पर उसने उसे दृश्प्राप्य कला विक्रंत के पास ले गया जहां उसे इसके लिए 50 येन मिला । आगे चलकर इस कलाकृति को एक धनी संग्रह कर्ता के हाथ बेच दिया गया जिससे 600 येन प्राप्त हुआ ।

Q1- Who was Seibei ? What was his hobby ? 

Ans - Seibei was a twelve year Japanese boy reading in the primary school.He was living with his parents in the harbour town. His hobby was to collect gourds and make them lovely. 

Q2- Pick out instances form the story to show that Seibei was passionate towards gourd collection ? 

Ans - Seibei has a keen interest in gourd collection . He had no interest in playing but he was fond of gourd collection . He wandered here and there in the city to get different varieties of gourd. 

He bought them and made experiments. He used to make a hole on the top of the gourd and extracted seeds from it. He filled up the hole with tea leaves and used to fetch a little dregs in it. He kept it in the charcoal that the skin would be thoroughly damp from the over night treatment. He was charmed and kept it in the sun to dary . 

Q3- Explain the views of Seibei's father about him and his hobby ? 

Ans - Seibei's father wanted him to be a noted scholar. He was uneasy to think about his son's hobby of collecting gourds. He thought that his son has been misled and wanted to make hi to obey his order . He wanted to give up his unwanted hobby for ever. 

Q4- Why did Seibei's teacher become angry with him ? Was his anger justified ? 

Ans - Seibei was in the class. The teacher was dictating the boys . Seibei did not listen him. He was busy in painting gourd . When his teacher saw it, he was fired and rebuked him much. His anger can not be justified because the teacher was unaware about his talent and instead of explaining the fact he . made him upset. The teacher must show the boys the proper path and his hobby must be safeguarded. 

Q5- Seibi's teacher held his parents responsible for Seibei's mistake Do you agree with the teacher ? Explain . 

Ans - Seibei's teacher held his parents responsible which was quite contrary. His father was working in carpenter's shop and getting no time to look after his son properly. His son was intelligent and it was his desire to make him learned . His son was found of collecting gourds. Although he knew his hobby but never expected like this occurrence. Thus the teacher's opinion is quite contrary in my view . 

Q6- Describe in your own words the attiude and reaction of the teacher to Seibei's passion. 

And - Seibei was innocent. He was fond of painting. He wanted to make his desire lively . He was painting the gourd in the class room. keeping it in the desk drawer. The teacher found him guilty of dong the work against the norms of teaching . He should have make him convinced about his fault and might give him time to change his style of working. The teacher not only punished him but also reported to his parents. His manner and reaction can no be justified . 

Q7- Why and how did Seibei change his hoby ? Describe in you own words . 

Ans - Seibei got punishment for his creative work in the class. His hobby of collecting gourds was no more and he tried to spends his full time in reading Hence seibei changed his hobby under compulsion and decided to make his life sublime. 

Q8- Sketch the character of Seibei as an artist . 

Ans - Seibei was a born artist. he had hobby to collect gourds and make them lively by his artistic talent. He could not get support from his father but went ahead to fulfill his desire. He was humliated and punished but never cared for that. He was really and artist who made his way himself . 

Seibei's hobby was to collect gourds and make them lovely . He had been interest in gourd collection . He bought them and made experiment. He used to make a hole on the top of the gourd and extracted seeds from it . He filled upp the hole with tea leaves. He kept it warm and them painted it. This painted gourd seemed to people and antique and this was selled out in the market in heavy price . 

This shows that Seibei was good artist .
